Two Weymouth Catholic Schools Partner Next Schoolyear

The Patriot Ledger, June 1, 2020

WEYMOUTH — The Archdiocese of Boston will combine students at two Catholic schools in Weymouth and divide them by grade next school year in an effort to accommodate social distancing guidelines amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sacred Heart School in Weymouth Landing and St. Francis Xavier School in South Weymouth on Monday announced a partnership that will house pre-kindergarten through fourth grade at Sacred Heart, and fifth through eighth grades at St. Francis Xavier School.

Officials say distributing students across two campuses will allow each grade level to use multiple, often conjoined classrooms as needed so that students can spread out and meet distancing guidelines that may be in place for schools this fall.

Robert Murphy, current principal of St. Francis Xavier School, will oversee the partnership as headmaster, and Shannon Mazza, a teacher at Sacred Heart, will serve as vice principal. A shared board will oversee the partnership.

“I am thrilled that each of these schools will be able to specialize and focus on their respective student grade levels,” Murphy said in a statement. “It is a great response to a challenging time in our country and world. These students will be afforded a tremendous Catholic education, supported by two school communities and the surrounding area.”

Sacred Heart School will continue to use its learning center, which serves students with Individualized Educational Plans and hosts a gifted and talented program.

The schools will also develop remote learning capabilities in case students and teachers need to be separated for an extended period of time.
